NYS recognizes cheerleading as a competitive sport
The New York State Board of Regents voted unanimously Tuesday to approve cheerleading to be recognized as a competitive sport.
Cheerleading will now be regulated by the NYSPHSAA for the first time. Coaching and safety standards will be enforced, as is the case with all recognized sports. Cheerleaders will also have the opportunity to compete for a state championship. A committee will be established next month to conduct the implementation of the new sport.
