Know Thy Enemy: Class A Boys Soccer Edition
With the boys soccer tournament winding down this weekend, I thought we'd reinstate a blog series that I did during last year's sectional tournaments. It's KNOW THY ENEMY time.
Under the cut, you can see break downs of all three of the other teams left in the Class A boys tournament. Now, keep in mind that Averill Park will be playing Pittsford Mendon in the semis on Saturday at 1:45, so that's why there's the most info about them. But there's also a few tidbits about the other side of the bracket, so that we know what we're all getting into if the Warriors make it to Sunday's championship.
Have a happy soccer weekend everyone.
Pittsford Mendon - Section V champion, 12-3-6
will play Averill Park at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday
How They Got Here: topped East Aurora 1-0 in last week's regional final.
The Vikings also beat Pittsford Sutherland 2-1 in penalty kicks in the first round of the state tournament.
Who To Watch Out For: Nick Keneally. The senior not only connected on the game-winning penalty kick in the Vikings' victory over Pittsford Sutherland but also netted the only goal in the regional final. His most recent goal came off a set up on a corner kick an Keneally has a knack for finding open space on the field to give him a solid chance at putting the ball in the back of the net.
Also watch out for senior Matt Renzi and junior Joe Perry, who have both netted seven goals on the front line this season.
Fun Facts: The Vikings have three goalies on their roster - two seniors and one junior. They've all seen some action in net this season, which is interesting since they've all been fairly successful. Tommy Ernst has allowed the most goals with 11, while Stu Frank and Matt Cialone have given up six and three respectively.
By The Numbers: This season the Vikings have out-scored opponents 43 to 20, while junior Stu Frank has led the way in goal with 94 saves in 1,079 minutes played. Of the 43 goals the team has score, 38 have come off of assists.
Last Championship: Pittsford Mendon hasn't won a state title since 2005, and that was a shared crown, but there's a long legacy of success with this program. The Vikings have won six NYS titles.
THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BRACKET
4:15 p.m. on Saturday
Goshen Central - Section IX champion, 17-3
How They Got Here: Topped Pelham 2-1 in overtime in last week's regional final. Senior Colton Schaefer scored the game-winner early in the first OT on a perfectly place header into the back of the net. Luis Howell scored the earlier goal for the Gladiators.
Fun Facts: The Gladiators were the No. 2 seed in the Section IX tournament. Howell also scored in this championship game as Goshen topped Walkill 1-0 on November 4.
Jericho - Section VIII, 13-4-3
How They Got Here: Topped Long Island rival Sayville 2-1 in Sunday's regional final. Michael Blumberg and David Greenbaum scored within just over a minute apart in the first half to secure the victory. Reed Ginsburg finished with seven saves in the Long Island championship game.
Fun Facts: The Jayhawks boast a seven game win streak heading into this weekend's semi-finals. Right now they're looking to use that momentum as a force towards their third straight NYS title.
